Armed Security Guards
Armed security officers are trained, state-licensed professionals who carry a firearm while on post and are typically assigned to sites where the risk of violence, robbery, or high value loss demands a stronger deterrent than an unarmed officer provides. Guard Services USA places armed officers at retail stores, banks, cash-handling operations, healthcare facilities, industrial sites, and other high-exposure locations across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Every armed post is designed to have specific written post orders, a clear escalation path, and documentation. The beauty of our model is that when you need armed coverage on short notice, for a threat, a holiday surge, or simply a gap in your current coverage, we are able to rapidly staff it with the same standards as a planned post.

What Armed Security Officers Do
Our Skills
An armed officer can undertake all of the duties of an unarmed officer, but with added responsibility and training. Typical duties include:
- Maintaining a visible, armed presence at entrances, cash areas, and other high- risk areas
- Escorting employees during openings, closings, and bank deposits
- Protecting cash, pharmaceuticals, firearms, high-value inventory or sensitive equipment
- Monitoring access, responding to alarms, disturbances and suspicious activity
- Detaining or holding a situation, within the limits of state law and your post orders. The default is always to act as a deterrent
- Coordinating directly with local law enforcement during/after an incident
- Writing detailed incident reports and daily activity reports
Our armed security officers are fully trained and as such they are fully aware that the use of a firearm is an absolute last resort. The majority of what an armed officer undertakes on a given shift is observe, deter, de-escalate, and document. The difference with having an armed security officer is the level of threat that they are prepared to meet if it arises.
Armed vs. Unarmed Officers: Which Do You Need?
This is the most common question that we receive, and the honest answer is that most sites do not need armed coverage. The table below shows how armed officers compare with the other coverage types that we provide.
How our coverage types compare
| Coverage type | Primary focus | Carries a firearm | Arrest authority | Best for | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unarmed officer | Deterrence, access control, customer service, and reporting at one post | No | Limited. The same as a private citizen in most states | Retail, offices, healthcare, residential, and most commercial sites | Standard |
| Armed officer | Everything an unarmed officer does, plus readiness to meet a violent threat | Yes, with state firearms licensing | Limited. The same as a private citizen in most states | Banks, cash handling, high-value inventory, sites with a robbery history | Higher |
| Off-duty police officer | Uniformed police presence, traffic control, and high-risk response | Yes, a department issued firearm | Sworn law enforcement authority, within department rules | Highest-risk sites, traffic control, large public events | Highest. It may include department fees |
| Mobile patrol | Scheduled or randomized checks across several sites, lockups, and alarm response | Varies by program | Limited. The same as a private citizen in most states | After-hours checks, vacant properties, construction sites, communities | Lower. Billed by visit or route |
| Fire watch | Patrolling for fire and fire hazards, keeping a log, alerting occupants and the fire department | No | No enforcement role. Their presence is to raise the alarm | Sprinkler or alarm outages, hot work, construction, required event standby | Hourly, until the system is restored |
Arrest authority, firearms licensing, and fire watch requirements vary by state, local jurisdiction, and police department policy.
The Difference Between Armed and Unarmed Security Guards
Training and licensing
It is imperative that armed officers meet additional state requirements beyond a standard guard license, which usually include firearms training, range qualification and periodic requalification. Requirements vary by state, with some jurisdictions having their own local rules. Unarmed officers simply have to complete their state’s base guard training.
Level of deterrence
An armed officer sends a far stronger signal to would-be robbers and violent offenders. For sites that have a history of armed robbery, cash-in-transit exposure or credible threats, that signal matters.
Liability and cost
Armed coverage requires higher insurance costs which in turn is accompanied by a higher bill rate, in addition to it adding a use-of-force consideration that your legal and risk teams should weigh up. For many retail, office, and residential sites, a well-trained unarmed officer is the better and more cost-effective fit.
Off-duty law enforcement as an alternative
In some markets, an off-duty police officer is an option for particularly high-risk posts. Off-duty officers carry arrest authority that private security officers do not have, however availability, cost, and department rules vary widely.
When Armed Security Makes Sense
We typically recommend armed officers for:
- Banks, credit unions, check-cashing, and other cash-intensive businesses
- Retail locations with a history of armed robbery or organized retail crime
- Pharmacies and sites storing controlled substances
- Cannabis dispensaries, where state rules allow armed coverage
- Industrial and logistics sites with high-value inventory
- Executive or employee protection during terminations and other high-tension events
- Sites facing a specific, credible threat
We recommend starting with a security assessment, as that will give us the opportunity to customize the most efficient and effective security plan for you. We will look at your incident history, your location, and your operations and give you a straight recommendation, including when armed coverage is more than you need.

Scaling Up for Peak Seasons and Major Events
Black Friday, the holiday season, tax season for cash-heavy businesses, and major local events all raise risk at the same time. We help multi-location clients plan surge coverage ahead of these periods, adding armed officers at the stores or sites with the highest exposure and reducing coverage when the peak passes. You pay for the coverage you need, when you need it.
Rapid, Late-Notice Armed Coverage
Threats do not wait for a scheduling cycle. A robbery at a nearby store, a terminated employee who made threats, or a sudden spike in incidents can all create an urgent need for armed coverage. At Guard Services USA we pride ourselves on delivering 99%+ same-day shift fulfillment, whilst our dispatch team works the phones for urgent requests so that you are never left waiting for a callback.
Because armed posts require additional licensing, we verify each officer’s credentials for that state before dispatch, even on a rush order we never let speed impact quality of service.
How We Run Armed Security Programs
01
Screening
We undertake background screening, license verification, and firearms credential checks before any officer is placed.
02
Post orders
We provide written instructions for each site that define duties, use-of-force limits, escalation contacts, and emergency procedures.
03
Technology
The security officers check in through the GuardServicesUSA Protect app, which verifies location at clock-in and requires a photo check-in. Armed officers also submit a holster photo at check-in to verify that they have their firearm on person. Incident reports and daily activity reports are logged through the app.
04
Nationwide coverage
One point of contact for armed and unarmed coverage across more than 20,000 locations that we have served in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are armed security guards allowed to make arrests?
Armed security officers generally have the same arrest authority as any private citizen in their state, which is limited. They are not police officers. If you require sworn arrest authority on site, ask us about off-duty law enforcement options in your area.
Is armed security more expensive than unarmed security?
Yes. Armed officers require additional licensing, training, and insurance, which increases the hourly rate. We will inform you if your site can be protected effectively with unarmed coverage.
Can I get armed security guards on short notice?
Yes. Our dispatch team handles urgent and same-day requests. We verify armed credentials for the specific state before any officer is deployed.
Can I use armed officers at only some of my locations?
Yes. Many of our multi-location clients use armed officers at their highest-risk sites and unarmed officers everywhere else, all managed through a single customized program.
Do armed officers need different post orders?
Armed officers tend to have a different scope, with post orders that spell out use-of-force limits, firearm handling and storage rules, in addition to escalation procedures specific to that site.
